Soaring bald eagle
Bald eagle in flight

Two of my favourite birds that we see regularly are the great blue heron and the bald eagle. If we are driving in the countryside, we see herons more days than not. The eagle sightings are not quite as common, but we often see multiples in a day.

When you consider that the bald eagle was on the verge of extinction in the 1970s, the incredible number of them is nothing short of miraculous. They have made their comeback in spades.

With their six-foot-plus wingspan, watching eagles soar is a majestic sight. When they fly close to me, and I have had them fly past at 10 feet of altitude or less, they can seem massive and take my breath away.

Of course, eagles don’t spend all their time soaring. They can be found on the ground feeding on salmon or perched high in trees. Even then, they are a stunning sight to see.

The thought of soaring eagles brings one of my favourite Bible passages to mind.

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.  Isaiah 40:28-31

When I am struggling with things in life, I often refer to that passage alongside another familiar set of verses from Isaiah.

But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” Isaiah 43:1-7

Whether I am soaring above the problems of life or grinding it out day to day, these words encourage me.

We are not immune to the vagaries of life and its trials, but we can rise above them knowing that God is at work in us and that He never breaks a promise. I know that with the Lord, I can face whatever life throws at me.

It won’t always be easy and certainly won’t always turn out the way I hope, but I know I am in God’s hands, and He will not fail me.

Whatever you are facing today, hold fast. God has it in His hands.
