Issue 880 – Overcomers – October 12, 2022
At Cascade Falls near Mission BC, a short suspension bridge links viewpoints on either side of the waterfall.
Bridges like this one play havoc with my brain. One of my brain injury issues is some minor spatial awareness problems. It isn’t enough to impact my daily life, but it can be a real issue on suspension bridges. I can cross them, but there is a sense of disorientation as my brain tries to process the sky above and the drop beneath. It doesn’t happen on regular bridges.
It takes an effort of will to overcome that sensation and cross the bridge. It’s usually worth the crossing, but the discomfort is real.
Life comes complete with obstacles that we have to overcome. All of us have our own obstacles.
I recently thought about overcoming obstacles when reading the letters to the seven churches in John’s Revelation of Jesus the Christ.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’ Revelation 2:7
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death. Revelation 2:11
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it. Revelation 2:17
The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne
Revelation 3:21
These are great promises for those that overcome (conquer). It leads me to wonder who can conquer and how do we do it?
John’s gospel tells us the answer.
The one who conquers, will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
John 16:33
Christ has conquered.
In 1 John, we see this expanded.
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:1-5
When we hit the trials of life, we can overcome them through the victorious power of our Risen Lord.
Celebrate the victory.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
