Issue 1,148 – Unremembered – May 5, 2023

As I walked around the lake, I came upon the remains of a gosling. There wasn’t much in the way of remains, a bit of a wing and a few yellow feathers. I don’t know if it died and was then eaten or had been killed and eaten by a predator.
The parents, and his siblings had already gone on with their lives. Nothing was left behind besides a few feathers to indicate that it had ever been in this world. Even those few feathers would soon be blown away by the wind.
That’s the way of the world ever since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. People, and all other living things, are born, and they die. In the long run, nothing or no one on earth will ever remember their passing.
If being born, dying and being forgotten is all there is to life, we really have a hopeless existence.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. Ecclesiastes 1:2-4
There is no remembrance of men of old, and even those who are yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow. Ecclesiastes 1:11
There is no lasting value in pursuing the things of this world to leave a remembrance that we were here.
I made great works. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself. I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees. I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees. I bought male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem. I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man. So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me. And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:4-11
If you want to leave a legacy that you were here, keep your mind and heart on things eternal.
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21
Monuments won’t survive forever. Beneficiaries squander wealth left behind. History is fickle. Eventually, even the greatest and the wealthiest will be forgotten. What hope does that leave for remembrance of those of us who will never build monuments, leave great fortunes or be the greatest?
Only one, a legacy of souls impacted for all of eternity.
If you want to have an impact, share Christ with others.
Until next time, may the legacy you leave behind join you in heaven and may the size of the harvest be beyond anything you ever imagined.
Be Blessed
