Issue 1206 Break Time – July 28, 2023
I enjoy a cup of coffee first thing in the morning. I sometimes want a second cup later in the day. I try not to have one so late in the day that it might impact my sleep. I have been told by many people who are far more educated on the subject and sophisticated in their tastes that the coffee I drink isn’t even fit for peasants.
They are likely correct, but I have found that most expensive, exotic blends don’t appeal to my taste buds. Then again, the same could be said of wine. I know many people who can have a sip of wine and describe the flavours in incredible detail. As for me, I either enjoy it or not.
I guess I will have to content myself with not being very sophisticated. There is something, though, that my more refined friends and I do share an enjoyment of, the coffee break. I enjoyed my breaks while employed, and I still enjoy going out for a coffee with a friend.
Most places I worked allowed two 15-minute breaks during a shift and an hour for a meal break. Since most of my jobs were in management, my breaks seldom matched that time frame, sometimes, I had none, and at other times they stretched longer.
I have since learned of a very productive use for that fifteen-minute break, which still allows time to consume the beverage of choice.
The Bible can be read cover to cover in a year when broken into 15-minute-a-day segments. Bible reading is one of my hobby horses; I just have to talk about it. I have this weird idea that Christians would know much more about themselves and God if they spent more time in the Word. I’ve lost track of how often I have read it, and I still learn almost every time I sit down to read.
I confess that I don’t comprehend how people can say they love Jesus but never read His word. Many options exist for people who don’t read or like to read, including Bibles on CDs or read for you in many apps.
The Bible repeatedly speaks of the value of knowing Scripture:
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:1-3
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:1
I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Psalm 119:15-16
If the Bible is God’s word to humanity (and it is), we need to know what it says. The only way to know it is to read it and study it.
Will you give up one cup of coffee daily to read it and know God better? If not, will you read the Word while drinking your coffee?
Time in the Word is a break that can truly satisfy. Until next time, no matter how much you enjoy your coffee, may God be far more valuable to you.
Be Blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
