Issue 1419 – For a Purpose – April 11, 2024
I was pondering Genesis yesterday, particularly the creation narrative. Now, Christians disagree about many things related to the creation story. Was it literally done in six days? Is the earth old or young? Was there a gap between Genesis 1 and 2? The debates could go on endlessly. I favour a literal six-day creation, but it isn’t a hill I want to die on.
Consider the awe-inspiring act of God creating something out of nothing. It’s a concept that can leave us all in awe. My worldview, rooted in this belief, asserts that God created everything, including humanity, with a purpose and a plan.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. Genesis 1:26-28
Contrasting with this is another worldview, one that suggests humanity evolved from random chemicals, a process that somehow led to the replication and evolution of life into various forms, including humans.
Let us assume for a moment that the latter view is correct. That means that humanity is a random byproduct of a chance happening. If that is true, what is humanity’s purpose? What is your purpose as an individual? Where is your intrinsic worth? There isn’t any! We are simply cosmic accidents.
The Christian worldview holds that humanity was created by an all-powerful, holy, loving, merciful God to be in a relationship with Him and bear His image. Each person has value by virtue of being God’s image bearer.
That’s an incredibly hopeful perspective. There is a reason you and I were born, and we have a reason to respect every other person.
I choose to live with purpose. I desire to be in a relationship with God and serve Him to the best of my ability. I am flawed in actually doing that, but it’s what I strive for.
Will you fulfill your purpose or choose to waste your life?
Be blessed

Gleanings From The Word
Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary life.
Soli Deo Gloria (For the glory of God alone)
Never let the enemy tell you that you are worthless or insignificant. Your value in God’s eyes is so great that it was worth dying for. You are a blessing to the world. You are so precious to God that his plan for heaven will not be complete without you.
