I was recently listening to Randy Travis sing an old public-domain  song, Jesus on the Mainline. It speaks of the power of prayer and the ease of accessing God.

The lyrics are simple.

Jesus on the mainline, tell Him what you want.

Jesus on the mainline, tell Him what you want.

Jesus on the mainline, tell Him what you want,

Just call Him up and tell Him what you want.

If you want your body healed, tell Him what you want.

If you want your body healed, tell Him what you want.

If you want your body healed, tell Him what you want,

Just call Him up and tell Him what you want.

If you want your soul revived, tell Him what you want.

If you want your soul revived, tell Him what you want.

If you want your soul revived, tell Him what you want,

Just call Him up and tell Him what you want.

Call Him up, call Him up, tell Him what you want.

Call Him up, call Him up, tell Him what you want.

Call Him up, call Him up, tell Him what you want,

Just call Him up and tell Him what you want.

It made me wonder what God’s telephone number would be. To my surprise, I found a passage in the Bible that tells us.

The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the guard: “Thus says the Lord who made the earth, the Lord who formed it to establish it—the Lord is his name: Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33:1-3

Verse 3 tells us to call Him, and he will answer; ergo, it must be God’s telephone number.

All silliness aside that is a profound verse that tells us a great deal about the nature of God.

Firstly, He is accessible; in fact, He directly invites us to be in touch with Him. Long before the invention of telegraphs, telephones and the Internet, we could speak to God directly.

Secondly, He is listening when we call. I know that because He says He will answer.

Thirdly, He wants us to know Him. He invites us to call on Him and will reveal Himself to us.

Our Lord isn’t some grand, uninterested deity who created everything and then carried on, not caring about what He created. He is interested in more than just His creation in a general sense.

The LORD cares about each person individually. That’s amazing! It’s no wonder the Psalmist could ask, “What is man that you are mindful of him?” (Kevin’s rough quote from memory).

So go ahead. Call Him up and tell Him what you want. He listens, cares, and knows what is best.

We don’t always hear what we want when we call Him, but we know He knows what we truly need and answers in love.

What an incredible blessing. What a magnificent God.

Be blessed

Hallelu Yah / Praise God

Kevin

Gleanings From The Word

Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary life.

Soli Deo Gloria (For the glory of God alone)

Never let the enemy tell you that you are worthless or insignificant. Your value in God’s eyes is so great that it was worth dying for. You are a blessing to the world. You are so precious to God that his plan for heaven will not be complete without you.
