Issue 677 – Slippery When Wet – March 8, 2022

This country road looks perfectly harmless and safe when it is dry, but come the rainy season, watch out.
Like many country roads and country lanes, this one can get slippery when wet. The layer of gravel on this road is thin, and the clay underlay gets slick when it encounters water.
When that happens, you need to be paying attention to your driving, or you’ll walk and look for a tractor to get pulled out. Over the years, friendly farmers with tractors have pulled more people out of ditches and woods than can be counted. Many times they have been roused from sleep to assist some hapless traveller.
Life is like that. It can be smooth sailing day in and day out when suddenly you hit a wet patch and end up in the ditch or sunk in some soft spot.
Satan can be like that too. We like to think of Satan as looking evil and nefarious so that we can recognize him when we see him. Or sometimes, we think of him as a little red cartoon character with hooves, horns and a pointed tail. Neither of those pictures is accurate.
We don’t know what he looks like, except that he was created in a beautiful form. He can seem perfectly harmless.
Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God: “You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle; and crafted in gold were your settings and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared. You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you. In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned; so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendour. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you. Ezekiel 28:11-17
The enemy is a master of disguise.
And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. 2 Corinthians 11:14-15
Now, most of us are highly unlikely to run into Satan himself; we are not important enough. We can encounter his servants or even be tricked by the wretched nature of our flesh. When we’re far enough along, the trip gets slippery, and we end up sliding into the ditch of destruction or sunk in the slough of despond.
Fortunately for us, Jesus can pull us free. Better yet, let Jesus guide your steps so you don’t end up down that wrong path or if you do stray, listen and turn before it’s too late. Even believers can get stuck. Satan cannot sidetrack believers forever, but he can assist us in making big messes.
Until next time, follow the calling of the Lord and avoid those slippery places.
What happens if you’ve already slid off the road of sin and are in a wreck. Now, what do you do? If you’re smart, you’ll turn from your sin and seek the saving mercy of Jesus Christ. He can set you free.
If you already belong to Christ, turn quickly to Him in repentance and faith. Confess your sin and get back on the right road. He will never abandon you.
Until next time, may you trust in Christ to keep you on the right road.
