Issue 711 – Motherlode – April 11, 2022

In Alberta, many of the rivers contain gold. Unfortunately, it is fine flour gold.
Flour gold is tiny flakes about the same size and weight as a grain of flour. You can see them in your prospecting pan, but it takes a lot of them to make up for any significant amount of gold. It is just not economically viable to work it.
I have always believed that all that flour gold must have a source. Somewhere there sits a motherlode awaiting discovery. I have never been serious enough about prospecting to bother looking, although perhaps someone will find it someday.
A person could invest their entire life looking for the “mother lode” and never find it. I am sure that many people have already done so.
A similar thing happens in the church. People can get so busy chasing the mother lode of the Holy Spirit’s activities that they often miss Him. They run from one “miracle meeting” to the next, one revival to the next. They seem always to be looking for that extraordinary encounter with God and never finding it.
The irony is that Christ dwells in us and is hard at work all around us. Sometimes we are so busy looking for the big thing that we miss the day-to-day wonder of Jesus at work.
Elijah was looking for a move of God. It unexpectedly came to him.
And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
1 Kings 19:11-13
God could have chosen to reveal Himself in the wind, the fire or the earthquake if He had wanted to. He chose the whisper. I think He does that so that we need to seek His face and not grow complacent or not put much emphasis on the “big moves.”
The Israelites saw Him part the Red Sea but soon grew dissatisfied. The people on the shores of Lake Galilee saw Jesus feed five thousand from a few fish and loaves. Yet, it wasn’t long before most had turned their backs on Him.
The miracles impress but do not seem to hold our attention long. One of the flaws in our fallen nature is the “need” for bigger, better and newer. We are not content. Give us a miracle, and we soon want a bigger one.
The tragedy of these next “big show” seekers is that they seldom become a regular, meaningful part of a local congregation. They settle for a while and then flit on. In doing so, they impoverish themselves and the local church.
They leave behind fractured relationships. They miss out on opportunities to minister and to be ministered to. Ironically, the very thing they seek most continues to escape then.
God is constantly speaking, and the Spirit is always moving. We don’t need to chase Him. It is simply a matter of taking the time to watch and listen. Are you listening?
Until next time, may you hear His still, small voice.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed.
