Issue 715 – It Is Finished – April 15, 2022

Today we commemorate Good Friday, one of the three high points of the Christian year, alongside the celebration of Christ’s birth and resurrection. On this day, we remember the rejection, mocking, torture and death of our beloved Saviour Jesus.
We commemorate it because of what He willingly endured for us. The cost to Christ is too high for us to celebrate the day.
There is so much packed into the events of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday that volumes have been written on them and countless sermons preached. This morning I simply want to look at one of
the last sayings of Jesus on the Cross.
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30
What was finished? Was the work of Jesus completed?
At that moment, He willingly gave up His life as atonement for our sins. No one could take it from Him.
For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father. John 10:17-18
The sin debt was paid, but the work of Jesus continued. There was still time for Him to be in the grave. There was a need for His resurrection, His final days of teaching the disciples and His ascension back into heaven.
At that, the work still is not done. Today, Jesus still sits at the father’s right hand, interceding and advocating for all those who believe.
The disciples did not yet understand that. Jesus had told them of His coming death and resurrection, but they did not understand. They were alone in their grief and sorrow.
In His last moments, they ran away and betrayed Him, and they would have to deal with that guilt. The one they had dedicated their lives to was now dead, and everything seemed to have drawn to a tragic finish.
They will remain in that personal emotional, and spiritual darkness until the Christ is risen from the dead. It is in that sombre darkness that I leave us today.
The darkness has arrived. We await the light.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed.
