Issue 657 – The Flood – February 16, 2022
Gleanings From the Word

Someone asked me about the flood levels we received a couple of months ago in Abbotsford. This image shows the high water mark at one point along the Sumas River. A bridge ¼ mile downstream from this one washed out completely.
This bridge is at a low point in the local geography and part of the dyke/drainage system, but I think it indicates the volume of water we received.
I was at a men’s study yesterday, and we were looking at the Heroes of Faith in Hebrews 11. This week’s hero was Noah, so much discussion ensued around the flood and God’s judgment against sin, both past and present.
There were adherents of both a global flood and a localized flood view. Everyone believed in the Scriptural account and God’s righteous judgement; some differed on how much water was involved.
I believe the text and the evidence worldwide clearly support that the flood was global. I have never been convinced of any of the arguments I have heard for a local flood. Yet, it is possible to have differing views and still believe in the truth of Scripture.
We are all familiar with the account. God has had enough with the sin of humanity. He charges Noah, a righteous man, to warn the world and build a large boat. In due course, Noah built the ark; the animals, Noah and his family get on board, and the Lord seals the ark.
The flood drowns out all humanity except eight people and every animal not on the ark. Then the Lord makes a covenant with Noah.
God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.” Genesis 9:8-17
The Lord still reserves the right to judge humanity for its sin. Indeed He must; if He did not, He would not be a holy God. He is patient, wanting all who will come to be redeemed. Still, judgment must happen eventually.
He has given us a visible reminder of the coming judgment and our need to be reconciled to Him. He has provided that way through the incarnate Christ. Not only is He holy, but the Lord is merciful to sinners.

The next time you see a rainbow, remember the promise of God. Give Him praise and honour for His holiness, patience, and mercy.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed.
Kevin.
