Issue 854 – Cascade Falls – September 14, 2022

Today’s photo is of Cascade Falls, taken about a week ago during low water season. Looking at the caves and channels it has cut, it must be spectacular in the late spring or early summer. We plan on going back to see.
Looking at the waterfall got me thinking of a familiar Psalm. Most people only recognize the first few verses and don’t realize there is a waterfall in the Psalm.
As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my food
day and night,
while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?”
These things I remember,
as I pour out my soul:
how I would go with the throng
and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
a multitude keeping festival.
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.
My soul is cast down within me;
therefore I remember you
from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,
from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
have gone over me.
By day the LORD commands his steadfast love,
and at night his song is with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
I say to God, my rock:
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning
because of the oppression of the enemy?”
As with a deadly wound in my bones,
my adversaries taunt me,
while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?”
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.
Psalm 42
The Psalmist is in the midst of great emotional turmoil and feeling under attack. He doesn’t feel the presence of God, yet He trusts in the only one who can deliver him.
One of the beauties of the Scriptures is that lay bear the human soul. There is no effort made to pretty up the human condition. We are lost beings in a broken world.
The Scriptures tell us that God is no miracle snake oil concoction that makes our troubles disappear. He is there and will strengthen us and redeem us. Ultimately, we have victory through the Lord, but that doesn’t mean an easy road in this life.
In truth, the Christian life is often more complicated than the non-believer’s life. We face the same problems they do, but we also must deal with persecution and the struggle to overcome our own sin. Yet the battles have been one, and the Lord will bring us through.
I don’t know what you are facing today, but if you have Christ, you can get through it. He will carry you.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah
Praise God
Kevin
