For many years my father was an apiarist; he kept bees and harvested the honey. He quit when he and my mom sold the farm, and they moved to the city.

I stood, shivering outside by the gravesite. While we waited for the pastor, my thoughts drifted back to the last time I had seen my friend alive … I was sitting in my shop enjoying a cup of coffee between customers. I own a used book store in Pine Brook, one of the finest in these parts, Buckman’s Books.

As I recalled that flower this morning, my mind drifted back to when I was a child. When the dandelions went to seed, we called them puffballs and delighted to blow the seeds into the wind and watch them dance along in the air. I still like dandelions and puffballs, but I live in a culture that prides itself on its well-manicured lawns.
