Mill Lake is home to many nesting pairs of Canada Geese. Last  time I was there, I saw a family of ten, a family of three, a lone goose, and a family of seven.

In that seven, six of the goslings had already grown quite fairly large. The seventh was lagging quite a bit behind in development, so it wouldn’t surprise me if, before long, we were down to just six.

It didn’t matter to the parents that one was smaller than the other six. They were equally as protective of it and seemed to be just as diligent in looking after it as they were the other six.

That’s the way Christ is with us. There are many people whose physical, emotional, intellectual, or spiritual growth is stunted in some way or who, due to some situation in their lives, “lag behind” the group. Jesus loves all of them.

Some people who struggle in ways you and I can only imagine but Jesus loves them.

People are trapped in sin so deep that they will never get out without His divine intervention, but Jesus still loves them.

He loves us despite our sin.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8 

This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 

He loves us enough to respect our choice to accept or reject Him.

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Matthew 25:31-33

You see, He never “sends” anyone to hell. Everlasting separation from God is the natural consequence of our sinful nature; it’s where we all deserve to go. 

He reaches out His loving hand to any and all who would take it to save them from the flames, but He never forces people to accept His help. He’ll keep His loving hand extended to the end, but only we can take hold of it.

As believers, He has given you and me an awesome task and an incredible opportunity. We get to participate in the process of being God’s extended hand to the world He loves so much.

We get to share the incredible love of Jesus with others. We get to share with Him in loving the unlovable and caring for those who can’t care for themselves. We get to tell people that there is hope in a dark and pain-filled world.

His love for people is so big that when we get an authentic taste of it, we should want to run out and share it with others. Will you do so?

Many years ago, I installed a new interior door in the home where we lived. It was placed at the head of the  stairs going down into the basement. Actually, it was a recycled door, in a frame designed for a different door, but it’s a new placement.

When I went to install the passage set, I noticed that the hole for the striker plate didn’t quite line up. It was a little too high. Not a big deal. A couple of chips could be taken out with a chisel to enlarge the hole. The bigger hole would still be out of sight behind the striker plate.

Out to the garage to grab one of my toolboxes. I had to do a little rooting around to find the correct box, as I’m not very good at keeping my tools organized. Finally, success! I found the chisel I was looking for. There was a problem, though.

The end cap had come off the chisel, and it had bounced around in the toolbox with an unprotected blade. The blade had several big nicks and divots. That meant I had to re-sharpen the blade before I could use it properly. 

Having to sharpen the blade meant I had to find the sharpening stones and the sharpening stone oil. That was easier to do. I at least knew which box to look in.

I began with some general shaping to remove the bulk of the nicks on a coarse stone. Then, there was further shaping and sharpening on a medium stone to restore some semblance of an edge. This was followed by sharpening with a fine stone to refine the edge further. 

Finally, a finer stone is yet to be used to finish the edge off. It took the better part of an hour to get the chisel to the point where it was fit to use. The actual enlarging of the hole took less than two minutes.

That’s the way things work with God. We’re flawed because of our sin, and He needs to reshape us to use us for the purpose He designed us for. Sometimes it takes big, harsh adjustments to help us become the way He needs us. As we get closer, though, the refinements are gentler and finer.

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. Jeremiah 18:1-4

His shaping and discipline aren’t always pleasant or easy during the process.

It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment, all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:7-11

The rain was pouring down. It wasn’t just raining cats and dogs; it was raining lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!) or something much bigger. 

It wasn’t raining hard enough to keep me from fishing, though. It was raining so hard that the only people out were fishermen; even the die-hard golfers had long since gone home.

I had my raincoat (my big slicker), rain pants, rubber boots, neoprene gloves, and a hat on. Even that seemed to be working overtime to keep me dry. 

The problem was that while the gear did keep me dry, it also kept me from experiencing much. I couldn’t feel the lures or the fish with the gloves on, so eventually they had to come off.

The rain pants were hot, so I opted for wet legs instead. It only took a few moments before my blue jeans were soaked. The raincoat was constricting my movements, and I was wet anyway, so off came the slicker. 

After I adjusted to the cold and rain, it wasn’t too bad out at all. I was much more comfortable. By the end of the weekend, I had a cold, but it was worth it.

Too often, we go through life as if we were wearing our rain coats, rubber boots, and gloves. We miss out on experiencing life. We miss the touch of the world around us. We rush through life’s “rains,” and we miss the little joys and wonders along the way.

We miss out on the wonders of God because we’re too busy rushing, or we’ve insulated ourselves from anything other than the tiny part of life we focus on.

Did you notice the neighbor’s flower garden? What about the growing and changing leaves on the trees nearby? When was the last time you listened to a bird singing? They sing even in the cities. Even pigeons will coo, and they make the most wonderful sounds with their wings as they fly.

Did you hear the laughter of the children playing? Did you see the joy of young love on that couple’s face as they walked by? Did you savor the smell of freshly-baked goods in the donut shop?

When was the last time you slowed down enough for those things?

When was the last time you slowed down to listen for God? Did you even notice the way He answered your prayers or the joy in someone else’s life as He answered theirs?

It’s time to take off the raincoats, gloves, and rubber boots and experience an extraordinary God in ordinary life.

God isn’t hiding himself from us. He is a revelatory God who makes Himself known to those who seek him.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

We’re called to look for Him. The psalmist put it well when He said,

Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually. Psalm 105:4

You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.” Psalm 27:8

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1

The Lord is there and worth looking for and experiencing. Don’t simply take His glory and majesty for granted. Look around, see Him, hear Him, and touch Him in the things He created, and give Him all the glory for them.

Happy Independence Day (July 4^th) to all of our readers in the  United States.

Recently, the wind was blowing pretty hard, and I remembered a time years ago when I was farm-sitting for my parents in Northern Alberta. 

A good old-fashioned blizzard hit. The wind was howling, and the snow was coming down heavily. The wind picked up a full 4X8 sheet of 1/2’ OSB (oriented strand board), which weighed just over 50 pounds, carried it horizontally about a hundred feet, and drove it through the wall of an outbuilding.

For those who live with hurricanes and tornadoes, I’m sure it’s common to see such things, but it was still pretty awe-inspiring.

The wind is a powerful force. It is often used as a metaphor for the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures. 

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:8

It’s a perfect metaphor in some ways because we cannot see the wind. It is invisible, but we can see the wind at work. From the gentle rustle of a few leaves, to the waves of blowing grasses in the prairies, to the howling destruction and raw power of a hurricane or tornado, we can see it at work.

We see the effects, not the wind.

When the Spirit convicts us of our sin, we don’t see a physical manifestation, but we certainly feel the weight of the conviction. When the Spirit causes someone to come to Christ, we see a changed life and the angels rejoice in heaven, but we don’t see the Spirit.

The Spirit is always at work here and there, but no one knows what He looks like. Unlike Jesus, who took on flesh, the Spirit has no physical body; He is, well, He is Spirit. His work is undeniable. 

The Spirit can be right in the room, or in the heart of a believer, and we won’t see Him. We will see the fruit of His work.

… I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:16-26

You won’t see Him at work, but you will see the results in your life. Sometimes He is but the gentlest of breezes, other times He strikes with the force and fury of a category 6 hurricane.

Five mornings a week, I attend an aquafit class at the pool near  our home. I like to arrive 15 minutes before the class starts for a light warm-up and some social time with other attendees. That’s followed up by 45 minutes of water aerobics.

The class has a maximum of 40 attendees, some of whom participate in shallow water (light impact) and a lesser number who participate in deep water (no impact). Most of us are 50+, because working folk aren’t usually free to go to the pool at 8:15 on weekday mornings.

There are men and women of all cultural and economic backgrounds. Some are very fit, others can barely move, and most of us are somewhere in between. The community changes from day to day and week to week, but most are regular attenders. When a regular is missing, it is noticed, the same as when a newbie shows up.

There are non-stop talkers, shy people, complainers, grumps, and delightful people. Some will fight you to the death for their favorite spot (well, perhaps not literally, but they are possessive.) Others couldn’t care less.

Some are Christians. Others practice other faiths or have no interest in spiritual things whatsoever.

We share two things in common. Most of us enjoy a little social interaction, and all of us are trying to get fitter to some degree or another.

In some ways, the aquafit classes are a microcosm of our society, mirroring other common interest gatherings, such as social clubs and church groups.

The vast difference between these groups and the church is the Holy Spirit. While the Spirit indwells every believer, His power is magnified when we gather together. Christians gather to worship God and to learn to become more like Christ. Our worship should be Bible-based, Christ-centered, and Spirit-filled.

We can (and should) influence others outside of our church gatherings, but it’s when we gather as believers that we are encouraged and empowered for life between our time together.

It’s great to be involved with non-Christian groups, but we must not neglect gathering as the church.

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:19-25

Let’s be involved with the world outside the church, not to bend to its ways, but to bring the hope of Christ. Yet, let us not neglect gathering as believers.

Recently, I was surfing YouTube and clicked on several links to  old television shows, stopping for a moment on a quiz show. The kids seemed to know even the most obscure facts at a moment’s notice. I understand that the team consisted of selected representatives of their schools, but they were terrific. 

Another channel had the quiz show Jeopardy. The host provided a clue from one of several categories. Contestants have to answer in the form of a question. A wide range of formats for these quiz shows requires contestants to possess a degree of esoteric knowledge across various categories. 

There were “Who wants to be a Millionaire?” and “Name that Tune” and many others. Another popular television show was “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” After watching part of one episode, my answer is no. 

A quiz show whiz, I’m not. Jeff Foxworthy hosted The Great American Bible Challenge for a couple of seasons. I will err on the side of grace and say that it was not great, but we watched some of the episodes from the first season anyway. It went quickly downhill in the second season and died afterwards. 

If that isn’t enough, there is a plethora of trivia boards and computer games to keep you occupied. Trivial Pursuit, Bible-o-poly, and more are designed to test your knowledge. The world is increasingly full of knowledge and facts. The growth of knowledge is explosive.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s good to know something. A little knowledge can often come in handy. However, knowing things is not the same as being able to apply that knowledge. 

Even using knowledge is not the same as wisdom. A person can apply much of what they have learned and never achieve wisdom. A wise person may or may not possess what many consider knowledge. 

What’s the difference? True wisdom is a gift from God. 

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. Proverbs 9:10 

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. James 3:13-18 

True wisdom is Spirit-filled wisdom. Compare how closely it mirrors the list of spiritual fruit. 

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:22-24 

Even though I have a reasonably sharp mind for retaining trivial information, I know that there are way too many facts for me to remember. So, I have learned how to find details if I require them. 

I know I will never learn everything. The more that I understand, the more I realize that there is still more that I don’t know. 

 I also know that while I am reasonably intelligent, there are many to whom God has granted exceptional abilities. There are numerous preachers and scholars, both alive and dead, to whom I am grateful for the knowledge and wisdom they have given me. 

They have taught and continue to teach me much. I do know without question that my heart desires godly wisdom above all knowledge.

Tomorrow will be Canada Day, a national day of celebration.  There will be no Gleanings. 

Happy Canada Day, one day early!

I’m Canadian-born and a Canadian citizen. I’m proud to be a Canadian. I’m not always proud of the things my government or other Canadians do, but that is a different story. Of all the countries I have visited in North America, Central America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, my first choice to live would be Canada.

To narrow it down further, although I have lived in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Alberta, and BC, my favorite province is Alberta for several reasons. Still, I’d rather live in most of those provinces over any other country.

Having said all that, my primary citizenship is elsewhere. As a follower of Jesus Christ, a Christian, my ultimate loyalty is to Him. My citizenship is in glory. I’m a dual citizen, holding a Canadian passport and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. Philippians 3:20-21

I do my best to be a good Canadian citizen. I try to be honest and walk in integrity. I vote. I pay my taxes and I obey the law. I served in the military. Such practices are essential, and I believe all citizens should behave similarly.

I believe my Christian values help me to do that. Still, since my ultimate citizenship is elsewhere, I must follow God’s law if there are conflicts.

The Scripture commands us to be good citizens and to pray for those in power (see Jeremiah 29 and elsewhere). Jesus told the Pharisees to render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s.

And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk. And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him. Mark 12:13-17

Strive to live up to being a good citizen of where you reside, but always put the things of God first. That isn’t always easy.

May the Lord give you the wisdom and strength to fulfill the obligations of both citizenships.

Yesterday, I wrote on the subject of bread. That got me thinking  about the miracle of manna in the wilderness.

In Exodus, we read about the deliverance of God’s people from slavery in Egypt, being brought across the Red Sea on dry land, and their journey in the wilderness. In Exodus 16, the people are complaining that God brought them into the desert to die of hunger.

God tells Moses that He will provide bread from heaven, but it will come with a test.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against the LORD. For what are we, that you grumble against us?” And Moses said, “When the LORD gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the LORD has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the LORD.” Exodus 16:4-8

If you know the story, many of the people did not follow God’s instructions, and it wasn’t long before they were complaining again.

People are fickle and grow easily discontented. One moment we’re praising God, the next we’re complaining about the way He answers our prayers, or our brothers and sisters in the Lord.

How do we find contentment?

The first step is humility.

The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor, and life. Proverbs 22:4

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6b

Secondly, we need a heart and mind reset.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8

We turn our hearts to thankfulness.

…whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:7

Are you discontent? If so, it’s time for an attitude adjustment.

God is good even when we don’t appreciate Him. He’s worthy of praise for that alone.

Turn to the Lord in humble repentance. Remember the good things He has done and praise Him thankfully.

May we be thankful followers of the Lord.
