Issue 868 – Dairy Herd – September 30, 2022

I love this image of a dairy herd down at the river’s edge. I am far from a whiz at identifying dairy breeds, but they look like Holsteins or a Holstein cross. According to some sources I checked, Holsteins are the most popular of the dairy cattle breeds worldwide.
I often chuckle when someone is selling a Holstein (or another dairy breed) cowhide as “cowboy decor” or a “cowboy costume” coloured with dairy cow markings. If a cattleman had a hide on display, it would more than likely be a beef breed.
I know little about raising dairy cattle except that during the milking season, they can be time-consuming, requiring milking twice a day. I do know that I appreciate the end product because I love having cream for my coffee and cheese with a meal or for a snack. I know other animals give milk, but I have found that most goat and sheep cheeses I have tasted have not been to my liking.
I will stick to products made with cow’s milk.
The Bible speaks of milk. In the Old Testament, milk is spoken of as food, while in the New Testament, it speaks of immaturity.
Perhaps the most familiar verse on this topic is found in 1 Peter.
Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2-3
We see it echoed in 1 Corinthians 3.
But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. 1 Corinthians 3:1-3
This metaphor is also expounded in Hebrews.
About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Hebrews 5:11-14
Christians are called to maturity. We all start as born-again infants, but we are not to remain there. Like any other infant, we are to grow and mature. Not doing so is generally the sign of some form of impediment or disability.
How familiar are you with the Word of God? Do you read it and study it regularly, or are you content with a few verses in a Sunday sermon?
Whether you are an infant in the faith or have been a Christian for most of your life, you need to grow. We grow by learning what God has revealed to us in His Word and applying it (with the help of the Spirit).
Will you make the time to grow, or will you be content to remain immature? If the latter, you might want to do a heart check.
Praise God that we have His Word so readily available to us. Let’s not let that gracious gift go to waste.
