Issue 869 – Road Trip – La Conner – October 1, 2022
Yesterday, Kathy and I took a spontaneous road trip south of the border. We headed down to the little town of La Conner, Washington.
La Conner is a historic community located on the banks of the Swinomish Channel. The channel is one of three entrances to Puget Sound.
As we walked about, we enjoyed the variety of small local shops and galleries. Throughout the downtown areas are various historic sites and a surprising amount of sculptures and other artworks.
We enjoyed a fine meal of fish and chips at La Conner Pub and Eatery. We sat on the deck overlooking the channel. Across from us was the Swinomish Shellfish Company, and we saw a steady stream of local crab fishermen bringing in their catch. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.
We returned home on Chuckanut Drive, the oldest Highway in the area, dating back to 1896. A narrow two-lane highway with stunning views of Samish Bay, the Chuckanut was the first road to connect Whatcom County with points south.
What we accomplished in a few short hours would have taken weeks little more than a century ago. We enjoy a freedom of travel unknown by most people in the world throughout history.
We also enjoy remarkable freedom of religion. As the world continues to push back against the gospel’s truth, we see hints that even in North America, freedom to practice our faith is being slowly eroded.
That shouldn’t be a surprise. The fallen world hates Jesus.
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ John 15:18-21
Matthew 10 speaks on the same theme. It also encourages us.
“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 10:26-33
We can hold fast as we watch the world around us pushing back ever harder against Christ and His church. We are His no matter what the world throws at us.
