Issue 879 – Gold – October 11, 2022

This summer Kathy and I visited British Columbia’s Gold Rush Historic Town – Yale Historic Site. If you know me and my love for shiny things, you also know that I had to do a little gold panning.
The public panning trough has plenty of gold-painted rocks for tourists to find, but the locally sourced sands have the odd small real gold nugget. I was blessed to find one such little nugget and gave it to a young girl who was panning near me. She was thrilled with the acquisition and ran off excitedly to show her parents.
Her smile was far more valuable than the tiny gold nugget could ever be worth in cash value.
I also got to talk with a boy and be told all about mosquitos and their larvae, of which there were plenty. He was thrilled that I could identify some of the pebbles in his pan. He didn’t find any gold but treasured his garnet and small pieces of rose quartz.
Christians have a wealth of treasure far more valuable to them than gold readily available. We have a plethora of ways to read and hear the Scripture in most of the major languages of the world. There are still plenty of regional languages yet to have the Scriptures in their own tongue, but that number continues to shrink.
We can read the Scriptures in print format in English, Latin or the original languages. We can access it easily online. We can listen to it on audio from a variety of sources. We can watch some of the books of the bible acted out in video verbatim from the text.
We have access to online study tools, commentaries, interlinears, dictionaries and more that even the best seminaries could not match fifty years ago. We have an almost embarrassing wealth of resources available for free or relatively low cost.
The Scriptures are well worth mining for the truth. They are the inspired, inerrant Word of God given us to know Him by. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
Psalm 19
