Issue 881 – Caught – October 13, 2022

I have been a fan of Charles Schultz’s Peanuts comics for as long as I can remember. There is a recurring non-human character that I have always enjoyed, Charlie Brown’s kite-eating tree.
I like that character because I can relate to Charlie Brown’s frustration. It seems every time he goes flying his kite, that tree “eats” it. I encounter a fishing lure-eating tree whenever I fish along the banks of a river.
I wasn’t fishing when I found this one in Whatcom Falls State Park in Bellingham. The evidence is high up in the air and tangled in the branches. You can see three out of more than a dozen lures and bobbers snatched out of the hands of anglers.
Like Charle Brown’s tree and this angler robber, life comes complete with its own set of traps to be avoided.
Our enemy doesn’t wait passively to snatch things out of the air, he is active, and the Bible cautions us about him.
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8
That warning comes with assurances.
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 5:6-11
The enemy of God’s people isn’t a mere metaphor like Charlie Brown’s tree or localized like my angler annoying tree; he is real. Don’t allow anyone to convince you otherwise.
Our enemy is real and has power, but our LORD and King is sovereign. The battle between God and Satan is not a matchup between equals. The outcome was never in doubt.
Walk humbly with the Lord, quickly repent when you stumble and trust in Him to deliver you.
The battle belongs to the Lord, and we have our victory through Him. Be wary of the plans and snares of our enemy for sure, but fix your eyes on the real prize.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
