Issue 891 – Fire – October 23, 2022
Saturday afternoon, I was blessed to take some time and sit out in the backyard in my rocking chair and read. The weather was a little cool and drizzly, so I hooked up the propane fire bowl and set it on the covered patio with me. It made for a very relaxing, pleasant time.
When used correctly, fire is of enormous benefit. When misused or out of control, it is dangerous and destructive.
The Bible often uses fire as a metaphor for God’s holiness. His righteous anger against sin and rebellion in the form of idolatry is likened to a consuming fire.
Take care, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and make a carved image, the form of anything that the Lord your God has forbidden you. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. Deuteronomy 4:23-24
The Lord is a holy consuming fire that will drive out the enemies of Israel.
“Hear, O Israel: you are to cross over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, cities great and fortified up to heaven, a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’ Know therefore today that he who goes over before you as a consuming fire is the Lord your God. He will destroy them and subdue them before you. So you shall drive them out and make them perish quickly, as the Lord has promised you. Deuteronomy 9:1-3
The Lord consumed Ahab and Abihu with fire for rebelling with unauthorized (strange fire).
Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them. And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’” And Aaron held his peace. Leviticus 10:1-3
He is a devouring fire that burned against the enemies of Israel.
Behold, the name of the Lord comes from afar, burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke; his lips are full of fury, and his tongue is like a devouring fire; his breath is like an overflowing stream that reaches up to the neck to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction, and to place on the jaws of the peoples a bridle that leads astray. You shall have a song as in the night when a holy feast is kept, and gladness of heart, as when one sets out to the sound of the flute to go to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel. And the Lord will cause his majestic voice to be heard and the descending blow of his arm to be seen, in furious anger and a flame of devouring fire, with a cloudburst and storm and hailstones. Isaiah 30:37-30
The Lord offers great benefits and blessings to His chosen people. His anger burns strongly against His enemies.
It is wise to both trust and fear the Lord.
