Issue 906 – On the Mountain – November 10, 2022

Kathy and I enjoyed our joint birthday yesterday (we have the same birth day and month but different years). I’ve hit 65, so I now qualify for ALL the various senior’s discounts. Thanks to everyone who sent us birthday greetings and wishes.
In my personal Bible reading time, I have been doing a quick survey of the minor prophets, reading them through in succession several times.
At times, the words from the Lord spoken through the mouth of the prophets can be very hard to hear. His righteous anger against sin and against those who harm His people is terrifying. I can understand the words of the writer of Hebrews, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Hebrews 10:31
Perhaps saying I can understand is a bit of an overstatement. I don’t think any of us can fully understand the depths of God’s wrath or love. The extent of both is beyond what our finite heads can wrap around.
Yet, throughout the minor prophets, there is a golden thread of hope through all of Scripture. There will be a remnant that is saved. There is hope for God’s people. God is sovereign and will not abandon His own. There is a way to be reconciled to the Father and made right before His eyes.
In Micah, we read a marvellous promise.
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace. Micah 5:2-5
The Saviour would come, being born in Bethlehem. From this side of the resurrection, we know that the Saviour was Christ and was indeed born in Bethlehem.
Time and time again, the Old Testament tells us about the Messiah who would redeem us. A review of Scripture shows that prophecy after prophecy was fulfilled in exquisite detail. We can have confidence in the Word of God because it has proven itself to be without error time and again.
The writings of Micah include a beautiful picture of things not yet fulfilled.
It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and it shall be lifted up above the hills; and peoples shall flow to it, and many nations shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between many peoples, and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore; but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken. For all the peoples walk each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. Micah 4:1-5
What blessed marvellous promises. We can trust the Lord to fulfill them.
I encourage you to take some time to consider the words of the so-called minor prophets. You will see the wrath of God and the mercy of God laid out in great detail.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
Kevin
