Issue 908 Seeds November 12, 2022

This wild grass seed head caught my eye with its golden hues against a multi-hued green background. It’s a pretty common sight.
Seeing that seed head got me thinking about seeds. There are seeds of many shapes and sizes, and each produces a plant in keeping with its parentage. A grain of wheat produces a wheat plant, an acorn makes an oak, and a carrot seed produces more carrots. The concept is so familiar that we seldom give it a thought.
Yet, each time it happens, it is in accordance with God’s plan.
And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. Genesis 1:11-13
We know that different seeds germinate at different rates and under differing conditions. Sometimes, seeds can produce fruit even under the harshest of conditions. The smallest stalk of wheat I ever saw was in full bloom at less than the length of my thumb. It was growing on the side of a bale of wheat straw.
As Christians, the Lord commands us to evangelize, to share the good news with the lost. We often seem to think that our efforts are in vain if we share the truth with someone and they don’t immediately accept Jesus.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Just like a harvest of crops takes many steps to be ready, so does a harvest of souls.
Seeds need to be planted, the crop tended and watered before it bears fruit. No doubt some come to Christ at the first opportunity but many more need to hear it repeatedly before they come to Jesus.
I must be clear that none of us ever “leads a person to Christ.” The Holy Spirit does all the work and deserves the glory.
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 1 Corinthians 3:6-7
I do not doubt that it would be much simpler for God to do everything rather than rely on our inconsistent efforts. Yet, the Lord chooses to use us in the process.
I can think of no reason for that except that we are blessed in doing God’s work. To think that God could use you or me to bring the dead to life and rebels to the Lord is a humbling honour and responsibility.
You may or may not see the results of your efforts until glory, but keep sowing the seeds. We plant and water, and God brings the harvest.
We have been given the wonderful gift of reconciliation with God through faith in Christ. Let us share that good news with anyone who will listen.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
