Issue 914 – Tie Down Mystery – November 19, 2022

I frequently take pictures of little oddities, the curious things that give me pause to stop and think. This big tie-down bolt is one of such mysteries. The ring used to make the anchor is about an inch in diameter.
Obviously, someone used it to secure something, but what? It couldn’t be a boat because it was miles from any water. I found it out in the woods. It looks big enough to keep a pet dinosaur or dragon in place, but that can’t be it since dinosaurs are extinct and dragons mythical.
There was only one, so it doesn’t seem likely that it was used to hold a radio antenna in place; those usually require four, one for each corner. As far as I know, there were no buildings or industrial facilities nearby, so I am at a loss.
All I know for sure is that stuck in the ground, seemingly not near anything or serving any known purpose, is a heavy-duty metal anchor in the ground. Please let me know if you have any thoughts about why it might have been used.
I sometimes meet Christians like that. They seem adrift in the wilderness with no idea what their purpose is. What is the purpose of life?
The Westminster Confession answers that question, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him for ever.”
Now, to be sure, no confession of faith or catechism is inspired in the sense that Scripture is. Yet, they help articulate our faith to the degree that they are faithful to Scripture.
How does the Confession support this claim?
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Romans 11:36
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion. Psalm 73:25-26
The God of the Bible isn’t like some pagan deity who is distant and must be appeased out of fear. He loves us and desires a relationship with us. He wanted that relationship so much that Jesus died so that we could overcome the penalty of our sin and be restored to that right relationship.
Yes, we are to glorify God because He is the Sovereign Ruler of the Universe and the Creator of Everything. He is deserving of our worship and all glory. Yet, He is also our strength and portion; He is our hope and joy. That is an incredible truth.
Our appreciation of who He is grows deeper as we draw into an intimate relationship with the Lord. Our hope, peace, joy and love increase exponentially as we are crafted more and more into the image of His Son, and our minds are renewed.
Believers are secure in Christ, anchored in the love of the Father and sealed by the Spirit. We are free to enjoy Him and to all things for His glory. What greater purpose could there be?
May you truly enjoy the Lord and bring Him glory in all you do.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
