Issue 916 – The River – November 22, 2022
This panoramic view is near the Battlefords in Saskatchewan. I shot it nearly 20 years ago and didn’t note the exact location. I snapped it because I was taken by the breadth of the river and the big sky filled with clouds.
In one image, you can get a sense of the hydrologic (water cycle). The sun evaporates the river into the sky, forming clouds. When the clouds are heavy enough, they drop the water back onto the earth, flowing back into the river, and the cycle continues. It’s a marvel of design.
Some people believe that the universe occurred randomly with no form of a designer. I look around and see too many constants for that to be possible. We can calculate the speed of light, the rate of fall due to gravity, the weight of a quark, the distance the earth must be from the sun for life as we know it to exist, and so much more.
If you manipulate one of these many Anthropic constants, even a fraction, life cannot exist. The statistical probability of all the anthropic constants randomly occurring is beyond my ability to calculate but is so very high as to render the idea impossible.
The existence of these constants does not prove the Christian God, only the idea of some intelligent designer. Yet the God of the Bible makes some particular claims about the origin of everything that exists in the material world.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

We see a similar declaration in the gospel of John.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:1-4
If the Bible is correct in its declaration about the origin of everything, then we must pay attention to what it says about the nature of humanity and God. We need to heed the plan it lays out for our redemption.
If the Bible is incorrect about creation, we don’t need to pay attention to the rest of it. That is why so many people are adamant that God doesn’t exist; they don’t want to heed its warnings.
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. John 3:18-20
Paul writes,
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:18-20
The truth is out there, and God has made it apparent to us. We have been given a choice to choose light or darkness.
Choose life.
