Issue 920 – Split Power – November 26, 2022

This morning’s shot is a distant view of Canim Falls, near Mahood Lake, in British Columbia. From this angle, it appears to be two roughly equal streams flowing over the edge of the canton.
The image is misleading. What you can’t see is that both streams come from the same river, that the one to the left is far larger than the one on the right, and that there are more than two streams.
You get a better perspective from the following image.

Sometimes as Christians, we act as if our faith walk is two roughly equal parts working together. I see that in things like the bumper sticker that says, “God is my co-pilot.” God is not your co-pilot; He is the sovereign ruler of the universe who allows you the privilege of “flying” (or even existing).
By ourselves, we cannot even be reconciled to God. That takes an act of faith to trust in what Christ did on our behalf. We cannot even come to faith without him.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
It is the Holy Spirit who works in us to bring us into the image of Christ. We are not the power source; we are the vessels God has chosen to use.
When I find myself struggling with some aspect of my faith, it seems almost invariably that I have been in a season of trying to accomplish things under my own power. Even if my intentions are good, I don’t have the ability to achieve them apart from the Spirit.
The words the Lord spoke to Zerubbabel through Zechariah the prophet are equally valid for us today.
Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. Zechariah 4:6
Our faith walk isn’t an equal partnership where we can control God’s actions or step out without Him. The idea that we are in control is more ludicrous than an entry-level trainee thinking they can run a significant multinational corporation better than the CEO.
The Lord gives us the latitude to make mistakes, then disciplines and guides us appropriately to get us back on track. He forgives our stumbles and blunders.
Sometimes we get angry at God because He doesn’t do things “our way.” That is arrogance on our part; we cannot even see the entire picture, let alone know the right solution for everyone and everything involved.
We can rejoice in having His Spirit. It enables us to grow and equips us to handle whatever we need to face. He gives us Spiritual armour to protect us while we grow in Christlikeness.
We are blessed to play a role in God’s redemptive plan for all of humanity. Let’s celebrate that blessing and remember who is really in charge.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
