Issue 938 – Morning Has Broken – December 9, 2022

As we prepared to attend our regular worship service yesterday morning, I was outside a little early. The night had brought freezing rain, hail and snow, and I needed to brush the car off and scrape the windows.
The storm had broken, and the morning was bursting onto the scene. I remembered the hymn “Morning has broken,” written by Eleanor Farjeon in 1931 and brought to fame by Cat Stevens. I found myself singing the song quietly. Did it come to mind when you saw the title this morning?
When I first heard that song, I wasn’t a Christian and didn’t know who wrote it. I still thought of it as a beautiful song that might be suitable for singing in church.
Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the World
Sweet the rain’s new fall, sunlit from Heaven
Like the first dew fall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the One Light Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God’s re-creation of the new day
Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the World
The song is beautiful, albeit not particularly theologically profound. It celebrates the majesty of God’s creation and recognizes Him as the creator.
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. Genesis 1:31-2:3
What a beautiful moment that must have been. God deemed it very God and proclaimed the seventh day holy.
Even in our sin-filled, broken world, there is much that shouts out praises to the Lord. All of creation sings His praises.
All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name. Psalm 66:20
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. Psalm 19:1-4
Every morning we awaken is another day and another opportunity to praise our Lord and Creator. The new day may bring joy or sorrow, prosperity or poverty, blessings or curses. Yet, for the believer, we know we have victory in Jesus and every day brings us one step closer to spending eternity with Him.
Morning has broken once again. Praise the Lord.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
