Issue 401 – Refuge – December 22, 2022

A reader sent me this cute photo of two small deer safely tucked away on his property. It is a safe place for them, and he often finds them bedded down and snuggled in the brush and grass on his acreage.
All of us need that safe place, that refuge. The storms of life can buffet us brutally, and we need to pull ourselves away at times.
Unfortunately, most people try to manufacture their snuggle spot with material goods. As long as they have enough, they feel safe.
It is common thinking, but it doesn’t work. Material goods can’t protect us against everything, and we can’t guarantee that we will keep them. They may provide temporary respite but cannot serve us in eternity.
Our safe spot is neither a physical place nor in our possessions. Our safe spot is the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm 46
I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. Psalm 18:1-3
The world can take our health, our jobs and our material possessions. We can be persecuted and jailed. Christians have faced all that and more since the birth of the church.
The world cannot take our Jesus. We are sealed with His Spirit and safe in Him for all time.
Hold fast to Him, and He will walk with you through every circumstance. He truly is our refuge and strength.
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
Kevin
