Issue 947 – Fraser River Ice – January 2, 2023

Kathy and I have both been down with a cold/flu bug for the past several weeks. We have primarily spent it self-isolating, hoping not to give it to anyone else as we commiserated with one another.
Yesterday, after watching our Sunday service online, we both suffered from cabin fever. We needed to get out, but someplace that took little effort and avoided people. We grabbed a coffee and headed out on a Sunday Drive.
The weather was a mix of sunshine and light clouds, with patches of ominous-looking storm clouds building in places, particularly around the mountains. We decided to drive near Aggisiz, BC, to see the river ice on the Fraser. We had heard that it was heavy this year.
We weren’t disappointed. In places, the ice sheets are stacked up 15 feet or more above the shoreline. The spot we stopped (along the Rosedale Ferry Road) was amazingly busy with people out to check out the annual phenomena.
On rare occasions, the River will freeze over far downstream from this point; the last record I can find is from the 1920s. Clearly, the weather has changed at various times, even in recent history.
Our world is in a frenzy about man-made climate change. There is no doubt that humanity has some impact on the weather, but the weather is in a constant state of flux and has been since its creation.
Whether people believe climate change is a crisis varies and is a sensitive topic for many.
I am in favour of responsible stewardship of the planet. Our God-given role as stewards of the earth should cause us always to be doing the best we can in this area.
I am amazed at the number of people, both Christians and non, who are in a state of panic over weather changes. God is sovereign; even the weather obeys Him. The world cannot be destroyed or made uninhabitable without His consent.
The Scriptures tell us that this world will pass away and be replaced with new heaven and earth.
(Jesus said) Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Matthew 24:35
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 3:10-13
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. Revelation 21:1
Humanity will live beyond the passing away of the earth as we know it. Some will continue in eternal torment, and others in eternal bliss.
Our hope lies beyond the physical and resides in the reality of the God of Heaven and Earth.
Don’t despair when the world brings news of turmoil and tragedy or impending destruction. Trust in Jesus.
Fear not.
May this year bring you renewed confidence in the power of the Living God.
Happy New Year! I pray God blesses each of you with the best year yet.
Be Blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
