Closeup of a dandelion puffball
Dandelion puffball

I saw a photo of a dandelion seed head the other day,  and it got me thinking. Growing up, we called those seedpods puffballs. I love the look of dandelion puffballs and enjoy blowing on them and watching the seeds float about.

What mother has not received a bouquet of these yellow beauties from the hands of a small child or blown on the puffballs with a child to “make a wish”?

Of course, not everyone agrees with me about loving these yellow flowers. Originally introduced into North America as a kitchen herb, the humble dandelion quickly established itself and became problematic.

Attitudes are changing.

With the current move away from pesticides and perfect lawns, the humble dandelion is getting to be more appreciated. The flowers are pretty and provide feed for the bees.

People are rediscovering the dandelion as a kitchen herb. The roots can be roasted and used as a coffee substitute or be peeled and cooked in a stir fry. The roots can even be peeled and eaten raw for a crunch treat. The flower can be made into wine. Young dandelion leaves make a delicious salad green. I haven’t even really touched the list of culinary and health benefits of this pretty flower.

I thought about the puffball seeds floating in the wind, and the image of a dandelion in a hurricane came to mind. There are few things less powerful or useful than that.

I can think of a couple.

Attempting to earn our salvation is one of them. Good works will never do it. We are doomed to perish if we depend on our own righteousness or merit to be saved.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

The second thing as powerless as a dandelion seed in the wind is Satan’s efforts to get God to cancel the salvation of believers. He stands before God day in and day out, accusing the brethren, but His own fate is sealed.

And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

Revelation 12:10

We know that nothing can separate the elect from God.

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:31-38

We are powerless to save ourselves, and nothing is strong enough to break the seal of the Holy Spirit once we are redeemed.

Praise God that Jesus saves us and we stand secure.

Be Blessed

Hallelu Yah / Praise God
