Issue 972 – Teach Me – February 1, 2023

I am a bit of an oddball. That may not surprise anyone, but I mean it in a specific context this morning. If possible, I would be a full-time student for the rest of my life.
There are many reasons that is neither possible nor wise, but I do love to learn. I also love to share what I have learned.
In elementary school, I was one of those annoying kids who always had his hand up to answer. I didn’t do it to show off; I was simply so excited about learning that I wanted to share what I learned with anyone who would listen. I’m still that way to some degree.
It seems to me that many people don’t value learning and are content to get by with as little of it as they possibly can.
Our society today wants to keep people in a barely literate state without critical thinking skills. Even many post-secondary options produce “graduates” with minimal skills for thinking or even employment.
Already back in the 1980s, when I was interviewing and testing potential employees, many high school and university graduates could barely handle grade six or seven mathematics and English. I know Canada has been sliding down the scale compared to other nations fairly steadily since then.
Technology has given us access to more information than any generation before us, But it doesn’t make us think. It can be a tool for learning, but more often than not, it becomes a distraction.
The Scriptures repeatedly affirm God’s pleasure when we have humble, teachable spirits. We are designed to be life-long learners.
Some of our learning comes in the form of structured classes. After high school, it might be college, university or technical school. Still more of our learning comes through reading and more informal situations. Not all of our learning is (or should be) “book learning.” We can learn by doing. Our mistakes or the mistakes of others can teach us as well.
The first step to having a teachable spirit is humility. We have to be honest and admit that we don’t know everything. That can be a tough admission for many. It has to be followed by a desire to learn.
There is much that we need to learn for everyday life. Yet, the most important thing we need to know is the way of God. Scriptures affirm our need many times. The following is just a sampling of texts.
Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Psalm 25:4-5
Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. Psalm 86:11
Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. Psalm 27:11
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Psalm 51:6
Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! Psalm 119:12
Do you have a teachable spirit? Are you set on lifelong learning mode? If not, perhaps you need to self-check and find out what holds you back.
The more we know and apply what we have learned, the better off we are.
May you know the Lord and His ways more deeply every day, and the cry of your heart be “Teach me, Lord.”
Be Blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
