Issue 996 – The Great Reset – March 2, 2023

We all make bad choices in life, and sometimes we wish a do-over was possible. We want a short reset and have the opportunity to correct a wrong decision or get out of a bad situation. That only happens in bad novels and poor sci-fi movies; it doesn’t happen in reality.

We get a rest and rebirth of sorts when we become believers. The righteousness of Christ covers the eternal consequences of our sin, and we are reconciled to our Heavenly Father. That is a gift of immeasurable value, but it doesn’t erase the earthly consequences of our sin.

God warned us with a partial reset when He flooded the entire earth for their wickedness, leaving only Noah and his family alive. The Lord knew that reset wouldn’t take, but it was an opportunity of sorts for humanity.

The Lord instructed His people to do a reset every fifty years by giving them rules for a Year of Jubilee (see Leviticus 25). Debts were to be forgiven, and property returned to the original owner. There is no historical record of a Year of Jubilee ever taking place.

A complete and final reset is coming that cannot and will not be ignored. This reset will blow away any fictional resets or do-overs.

For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the Lord, so shall your offspring and your name remain. Isaiah 66:22

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Matthew 24:35

But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Mark 13:32

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 2 Peter 3:10

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:1-4

The unrepentant wicked will be finally delivered to their place of eternal torment. All excuses will be laid bare and judgment made. Believers will be glorified and spend eternity with our King.

Our dwelling place will be in a new heaven and earth, unplagued by the ravages of sin and sin-filled humanity.

We know we cannot predict the day that event will happen, although that hasn’t stopped many people from doing so. I am always at the number of people who read Revelation as a countdown checklist for the Lord’s return rather than a revelation of Jesus the Christ.

We know that the Lord is faithful in keeping His promises. The reset could happen before you finish reading this, or it might not happen for years, decades, or centuries. Still, we know it will be.

The reset will result in a more beautiful and God-centred world than anything we can imagine. What a day that will be.

In the interim, our role is to live our lives as if He is returning any second. We are called to love, obey, serve and proclaim the gospel to the best of our flawed ability. May the world see Jesus in us and be drawn to Him.

Hold fast, my friends; something better than a do-over is coming.
