Issue 1,004 – Seeing – March 15, 2023

With my recent eye injury and subsequent surgery, things of the eye have been on my mind. Losing more than 95% of the vision in one eye in a few hours tends to get my attention. The repair surgery seems to be successful, and over the next few weeks, or months, I should know how much of my eyesight I will get back.
When I first saw the specialist, I was hit with the options. If I did nothing, I would permanently lose my vision in that eye. If I had the surgery to repair the tears and reattach the retina, there was an 85% chance they could save most of the vision. It was a pretty easy choice.
I found myself praying for God to restore my vision, but still having comfort that the Lord knew what was best and that if I didn’t regain my sight, I could still trust Him.
It seems likely that I will have some vision at this juncture, but time will tell how much. I will wear an eyepatch for a few weeks until things settle down. Not wearing one leaves me feeling disorientated.
The Bible has some interesting things to say about seeing.
And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders. But to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear. Deuteronomy 29:2-4
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people: “‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’ Make the heart of this people dull and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” Isaiah 6:8-10
And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, so that “‘they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.'” Mark 4:11-12
Christians often think that it is due to some exceptional merit or insight on their behalf that they open their hearts and minds to God. None of us can come to Christ without Him opening our spiritual eyes and ears to hear His call.
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14
The Lord opens our eyes and gives us the faith to be saved.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10
I am grateful for the gift of physical sight. I am even more thankful that the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to the need for Christ and gave me the faith to respond.
If you hear Christ calling respond to Him. If you already know the Lord praise His name for giving you the only gift that lasts forever.
Be Blessed
