Issue 1, 013 Signs and Wonders March 25, 2023
People are fascinated by signs and wonders and miracles done by God. Even a large segment of the Christian population is ever searching for them. These people move from church to church and event to event, always searching for the greatest and newest move of the Holy Spirit.
Many in the non-Christian world seek them as well. They claim that they will believe if only they can see one. Like the Jews in Jesus’ day, they won’t have a heart change even if they see one.
The Pharisees kept asking Jesus for a sign, even though they had personally witnessed miracles and heard testimony about many more.
The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ”It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.” And in the morning, ”It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.” You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed. Matthew 16:1-4
The Scriptures record many signs, wonders and miracles. The history of the church is littered with them. I do not doubt that God still uses them when He deems them appropriate.
The irony is that we are surrounded by signs and wonders all the time. The very evidence of creation shows the fingerprints of God.
The problem is that they are so familiar that we overlook them.
The fact that there is any form of life, or even anything when there should be nothing, proves God. The law of physics teaches that something cannot be created from nothing. Yet we have something that had to be outside the physical world to cause it.
The buzzing of a bee in flight, the beauty of a flower, the laugh of a child and a newborn’snewborn’s first cry are all miracles. Every breath we take is only by God’s gracious act of mercy. He could have chosen to end the world entirely in the days of Noah or take our lives at our first sinful act.
The rising and setting of the sun and moon are everyday events. Most days, we pay no attention to them, yet the entirety of the universe is held together by the will of God.
How many times in our lives have we been spared from harm in inexplicable ways? How often have things “happened” to align perfectly for something we desired or needed to happen? Every one of those is a miraculous act by the Creator of Heaven and Earth.
It is no wonder that the Bible can make statements like,
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Psalm 19:1
All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name. Psalm 68:4
But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:7-10
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:20
God will sometimes shout in signs and wonders too big to ignore. He parted the Red Sea and brought forth waters from the Rock. The Lord lead the people of Israel with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. Jesus came as a human and, during His life, healed and delivered many. He took on our sin.
Yet we know that God also speaks in quiet whispers. Stop, look around and listen. The evidence is everywhere; we will only take the time to see it.
Praise God for how He has manifested himself to us.
Be Blessed
