Issue 1,125 – Sunday is Coming – April 8. 2023

Today we sit in a period of waiting with the disciples. Yesterday was Good Friday. Our Lord is dead and buried in a borrowed tomb. They were in shock, wondering if they had followed the wrong Messiah.
They still hadn’t come to understand what Jesus had been teaching them. That wouldn’t come until after they encountered Him resurrected.
Unlike them, we know that Sunday was coming. The woman, followed by some disciples, would find the empty tomb in a few hours. Jesus was risen.
Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” Matthew 28:1-10 (see also John 20, Luke 24, Mark 16)
In churches worldwide, believers will greet one another tomorrow with “He is risen!” and hear “He is risen, indeed!” in reply.
What marvellous, incredible news. Death is defeated. Sins have been atoned for. The Christ has lived a sinless life and been sacrificed to pay the penalty for the sins of those who would trust him by faith. The ultimate gift from our loving God had been opened.
All the believers from before His incarnation have had their faith personified and vindicated. They had not believed in vain. Our hope was made real centuries before our birth; we can rejoice with them.
We particularly celebrate the resurrection at Easter. Jesus’ defeat of death is foundational to everyday faith and life. With His death and resurrection, we are saved.
The Heidelberg Confession asks, “What is your only hope in life and death?”
It answers, “That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ; who, with his precious blood, has fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must work together for my salvation, and therefore, by his Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto him.”
Jesus’ death has bought us freedom, and His resurrection confirms His promises.
We can rejoice knowing that “He is Risen!” every day.
Be Blessed
