Sunrise and sunset are often powerful times of the day. There is something special about the beginning and closing of the day, and the beauty of the rising and setting sun enhances it.
Watching a sunset is an act of faith. We can comfortably watch the sun disappear over the horizon and darkness settle in, knowing that come morning, it will climb back into the sky from the opposite side.
That faith is born of experience. The sun has arisen and set every day since its creation. Since our time as small children, we have known that it will return when the sun goes down. It is a time-tested truth.
We can’t always see the sun rise or set. We might be sleeping or indoors at the time. The weather might inhibit our vision. It can happen unseen around us because we are too preoccupied to notice. Yet, by faith, we know that it rises and sets the same as it always has,
My Christian faith isn’t a leap into nothingness; it isn’t blind. It is supported by the historical events of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. It is supported by the Word of God as revealed in the Holy Scriptures. My faith finds support in the testimony of the transformed lives of millions, in the order of creation and in seeing the changes God had wrought in my own life.
Can I “prove” Christianity is true? No more than I can “prove” the sun will rise tomorrow after setting tonight. Yet, by faith, this too I know to be true.
From the sun’s rising to its setting and in between, God remains the sovereign creator and ruler of all that there is. The sun rises and sets by laws and principles that He established and at His command.
From sunrise to sunset, the Lord exhibits His grace and faithful loving-kindness. He calls people to Him and strengthens those who have come to the light.
From morning to night and back again, He is worthy of our praise. No matter what happens in those hours, God is worthy of all glory, honour and praise.
Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord! Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore! From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised! The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord! Psalm 113
When you look to the sky and see the sun rising, setting or at its mid-day apex, remember the one who rules it all and praise His holy name. When you look skywards, and all is dark, you can still praise His name, knowing that the dawn is coming.
