Issue 1,135 – Walking with the Big Dogs – April 20, 2023

The top of my desk is covered with a pane of glass. Under the glass are photos of family, some going back four generations. Amongst them is one picture of a pet, Genni the Wonder Dog.
Genni was a border collie/basset hound mix, the accidental result of one neighbour’s doge getting loose. We got her outside the SPCA, where the family was bringing her. She adopted me right away, so I had to take her home. Genni was my faithful companion for a dozen years or more until she passed away some years back.
As I looked at the photos this morning, I remembered an incident that happened years ago as I walked Genni around Broadmoor Lake, across the street from our home.
I saw a father and son approaching me from some distance. The boy wasn’t very old, perhaps four or five. He strode up boldly and said, “Mister, can I pet your dog?”
I looked at the dad, and he nodded yes, so I said, “Okay.”
I made Genni sit and knelt beside him. She got excited the first few moments after meeting someone and sometimes liked to jump up and lick them. Since that can be pretty scary to a little one, I wanted to hold her down.
“He’s a nice dog,” the boy said. “I’m going to get a dog. A big dog, like a great dame, a Doberman, or a German shepherd or something. Something really big.”
I smiled to myself at the words “great dame.” “That will be nice,” I said, “You’ll have to walk him just like I walk Genni.”
“Yes. Me and my dad, we can walk any dog, even a big one.” A few more pets, and then they were on their way. I saw him a little later petting another dog and no doubt regaling the owner about the big dog he would get.
His confidence in his dad struck me: “Me and my dad, we can walk any dog, even a big one.” That’s the kind of confidence we need in God.
Our God can handle any problem, even big ones. He’s defeated the enemy and given us the way to be reconciled to Him despite our sin. He’s the all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present God who never changes.
While in the wilderness near Mount Horeb, Moses talked with the Lord at the burning bush.
Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”
God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord] the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations”
Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, `The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, `What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: `I AM has sent me to you.’ Exodus 3:13-15
He’s the I AM. He’s not the God of I was, or I might be. He is the ever-present one who can meet everything we need. He is the God who never changes. Our circumstances and problems might change, but God never does.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
The LORD is the one who can deal with it all. No problem is too big for God.
Do you have faith in Christ like that boy does in his earthly father? Your heavenly father can walk big dogs and more. Trust Him.
God has your back (your front and everything else as well.)
Until next time, may you truly understand that no dog (or problem) is too big for our God.
Be Blessed
