1,138 – Trust – April 24, 2023

This long-time reader-submitted photo screams trust. The boy joyfully leaps into his father’s arms, completely trusting that he will be caught.
While young children seem to trust their parents altogether, we find it harder to trust others as we age. People invariably let us down, typically unintentionally but sometimes with ill intent.
Those disappointments and hurts can impact our relationship with God. That can be complicated because the LORD works on a different timetable and agenda than we do.
We don’t always get everything we want when we pray, or the timing doesn’t match what we think it should. We question God, forgetting that when He promises to work out all things for God, it can mean struggles and disappointments for us.
While we seldom phrase it as crassly, we often think of ourselves as “the centre of the universe.” We can believe that everything that impacts us must somehow be about us.
We sometimes want to make God earn our trust based on our criteria.
It is wise at those times to remember the words of the teacher: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5
Yet, that advice can seem problematic. How do we trust when we are struggling to trust?
We need to learn the character of the one we trust. When we can deeply see who the I AM is and realize that He is, was, and always will be perfect and unchanging, it can help us look past our circumstances to Him.
We can study His Word in depth, learning as we go. We can listen to the testimonies of those God has walked with before. We can take time to remember the times The Lord has come through for us in the past.
Our faith will be tested. Faith that hasn’t been tested is just wishful thinking. Times will come when we question what we believe and the one we believe in.
Jesus warned us about that,
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world John 16:33
In context, Jesus was speaking to His disciples about His death, resurrection, ascension and eventual return. It is a principle that we can cling to.
Problems and tribulations come to us all. They vary in nature, frequency and intensity, but we all have them. More importantly, though, is that we know Jesus is in control. He never changes. In that, we can trust.
He will catch us when we fall. That doesn’t mean we will always get what we want because God is more concerned with our holiness than our temporary happiness. It won’t always happen when we expect it, but the LORD’s timing is perfect.
Someone recently told me, “The Lord doesn’t always pay on Friday, but He always pays in full.” His timing and form of payment are best.
Simply trusting the Lord when we don’t think we need Him is easy; that isn’t really faith at all. Trusting Him when the going gets tough is when we see the depth of our faith.
Trust in Him. He will always respond at the right time and in the right way.
Be Blessed
