Stuck on door handle
Stuck on handle

I got my weekly report from Grammarly yesterday. I have been using that app daily and recommend it to anyone who writes. Over the last 24 months, it has checked 1,936,301 of my words. I have fallen just shy of my million words a year goal for two years in a row. Still, that’s a lot of words.

A million words are the length of ten average novels. That makes me about as prolific as a best-selling author, albeit with a much smaller audience and far less money.

Sharing insights on life and God’s Word with you is a blessing. It’s a blessing when I hear about how God works in your lives. Thanks for making it worthwhile.

Now onto today’s Gleanings…

I suffer from a problem that I thought was unusual, but many people can relate. My waist is at just the right height that my belt loops can catch on door handles, and the corner of my pants pockets gets grabbed by drawer pulls.

Several times a day, I extricate myself from their grabbing attention. I got caught this morning while making coffee and freed myself quickly.

It brought to mind I was stuck far worse. One Friday evening, I was heading out to “the cowboy church.” I had both hands full, so I simply hip-checked the screen door as I had done a thousand times before. This time it was different.

The handle caught both my belt loop and a set of keys hanging off my belt. They tied in a knot on the handle instantly. I was stuck. I could move neither forwards nor back. I couldn’t use my hands to free myself as they were full, and I couldn’t bend down to unload. I could only call Kathy to extricate me from an embarrassing and silly situation.

Somedays that is the way it is. We find ourselves in a place where we are helpless, and there is nothing we can do to solve the problem ourselves.

Fortunately, believers have the privilege of calling out to God for help. The LORD is never stuck, and nothing is outside the reach of His mighty hands. There are no better hands to be in.

King Jehoshaphat (4th king of Judah) understood that truth.

Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, and said, “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you. Did you not, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend? And they have lived in it and have built for you in it a sanctuary for your name, saying, ‘If disaster comes upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house and before you—for your name is in this house—and cry out to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.’ 2 Chronicles 20:5-9

He knew that come what may, God was in control.

Our God can rescue us amid any calamity. He is also the God who created us to fellowship with Him. He speaks to us through His Word and the Spirit but also wants to hear from us.

We are called to cry out to Him in our times of need and converse with Him daily. Our time with God too often resembles a pattern of:

God, I want this.

God, I need that.

God, hurry up.

Answer me know if you want me back.

That sort of prayer misses the proverbial boat. Yes, the Lord will rescue us when we get stuck, but we need to learn to come with a humble and grateful heart. After all, He is a God deserving our worship, not a butler at our beck and call.

Until next time feel free to call on Him when only He can help, but be sure to spend time with Him daily. Stop by and say hello to the LORD now and then, and listen. You might be amazed at what he has to say.

Be Blessed
