Issue 1,147 – Book of Promises – May 7, 2023

The Bible is a unique book in many ways. It is a library-like anthology of sixty-six books or source documents (more if you are Roman Catholic) written by various authors (the number of which varies depending on what scholars you read) over the span of the better part of two thousand years.
The Bible was written in three languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek) in various cultural contexts, from nomadic people to the height of Roman civilization.
Its books include short letters, poetry, songs, prophecies, genealogies and detailed historical accounts. There are moral laws and cultural commentaries. Some events are recorded in intricate detail, while others appear in thumbnail sketches.
It is the best-selling and most translated book of all time. As of September 2022, all of the Bible has been translated into 724 languages, the New Testament has been translated into an additional 1,617 languages, and smaller portions of the Bible have been translated into 1,248 other languages, according to Wycliffe Global Alliance.
It is the most-read book in history, the most loved and the most hated. People have died to preserve it and in efforts to destroy it. In some ways, it might also be considered the book with the most ignored message.
The Bible contains source documents written to specific people in given cultural and linguistic contexts. There is a sense in which it is written to all people in general but also written to each and every person personally.
The contexts are simple enough for every man, woman and child to understand. It is also complex to keep their entire career considering a single verse’s exegetic, hermeneutic, cultural and linguistic components.
The Bible details the best that humanity has to offer. It also shows the very worst of what society can be. It teaches how thin the line between the two extremes is and how even people who love the Lord can cross it.
The text contains laws and suggestions that make living with others possible and productive. There are dietary and lifestyle laws.
Written by everyday people inspired by the Holy Spirit and the very inerrant Word of God himself.
The Bible is also a book of promises. It contains promises of prosperity for obedience, blessings, salvation for those who accept Christ and damnation for those who refuse Him. It promises that justice will prevail and all wrongs righted.
God’s love for his people is the most significant promise and revelation from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. He loves us enough that of all the things He created, only humanity was created n His image.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27
He loves us enough to have sent His Son to die for us and take on the penalty of our sin.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16-17
He loves us enough to want to spend eternity with us.
“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. Revelation 22:16-17
Until next time, may you spend time in the book of promises and begin to understand what an incredible gift
it is that the Creator of Heaven and Earth, God Almighty, promises His love to you and me.
Be Blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
