Issue 1,150 – The Shepherd’s Name – May 8, 2023
Some photos friends recently shared of their newborn lambs got meditating on the 23 Psalm.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23
As I meditated on the name of God revealed in Psalm 23, I found that while Jehovah-Rohi is the only formal name of God mentioned in the Psalm, many others are alluded to or referenced indirectly.
Okay, The LORD is my Shepherd is obvious, but what about the others? Let’s have a look.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. – Jehovah-Jireh – the LORD Who Provides
He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. – Jehovah Shalom – The LORD My Peace
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Jehovah-Tsidkenu – The LORD My Righteousness
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, – Jehovah-Nissi – The LORD, My Standard (or banner)
I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Jehovah-Shammah – The LORD is With Me or Present)
your rod and your staff, Jehovah-Rohi – The LORD My Shepherd
they comfort me. Jehovah-Shalom – The LORD My Peace
You prepare a table before me – Jehovah-Jireh – the LORD Who Provides
in the presence of my enemies – Jehovah-Nissi – The LORD My Standard (or banner)
you anoint my head with oil – Jehovah-Rophe – The Lord Who Heals
my cup overflows. Jehovah-Jireh – the LORD Who Provides
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. – YHWH (Jehovah) – I Am that I Am
As you read the Psalm, the Lord may reveal different names or aspects of His character.
May your regular time in the Word never cease to show you more about our Lord and Saviour to you. May you ever grow to know Him more deeply.
