Issue 1174 – Road Trip – June 10, 2023

There will be no Gleanings on Monday as I have a speaking engagement in the morning.
Yesterday Kathy and I took a spontaneous road trip after AquaFit. We had a light breakfast, hopped in the car and headed for Nooksak Falls. We had never heard of the falls until Kathy noticed them on a map the day before while researching something else.
We grabbed our passports, headed south across the border at Sumas and drove toward Mount Baker.
Located on the North arm of the Nooksak River, the falls are in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, in the Cascade Mountains part of the Mount Baker watershed. Just a few miles down the Mount Baker Highway (Highway 542), past the town of Glacier, is a turnoff for the falls. Follow a potholed gravel road (passable for most vehicles but rough) to the parking lot and hike the remaining 75 yards.
The river splits into two sections below the bridge and falls almost 90 feet. The two cascades rejoin at the bottom and are then joined by Wells Creek and continue downstream towards Bellingham.

You can’t actually see the bottom of the falls because of the steepness of the gorge. Since the 1940s, at least a dozen people have fallen to their death attempting to get past the viewing area and see the bottom. If visiting, please stay in the well-marked and fenced-off visitor’s area.
A hydroelectric plant some distance downstream has provided electrical power for Bellingham and the surrounding communities since the late 1890s. There was a short interlude in the 1990s when the dam was down after fire damage, but it continues to operate today.
As I watched the falls disappear into the gorge, I could see Wells Creek heading to the bottom. Looking downstream, you could see parts of the combined river surging down the canyon.
Later, after exploring some and checking out another river segment, we took a road trip east, looking for someplace to grab a coffee and a snack. We ended up at a forgettable bakery in Lynden, Washington and returned home. The coffee break was a little disappointing, but, all in all, it was a wonderful day.
Later, I thought about the electric plant and all the raw power from the hidden bottom of the falls where it joins the creek. I thought about the power of the Holy Spirit. You know it is there and at work, but you cannot see it.
Jesus spoke of Nicodemus about the hidden nature of the Spirit.
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. John 3:8
The spirit came upon the assembled crowds at Pentecost.
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4
The Spirit dwells in every true believer.
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior. Titus 3:4-6
Believers are made new when they come to Christ and are empowered by an infinite source. The Spirit causes us to bear fruit, intercedes for us, grieves over our sin and conforms us into the image of Christ. We may never actually see the Spirit, but His work in transforming believers is undeniable to anyone who has the eyes to see.
God has gifted us in an incredible way that transcends our mere salvation (although that is an almost incomprehensible act of mercy in and of itself).
May we be aware of His prompting and guidance and respond to it.
Be Blessed
