Issue 1185 – Trick of the Light – June 24, 2023

This morning I was looking at a back issue of Gleanings from July 2001, which is still relevant today. Almost 22 years later, the problems and the solution remain unchanged.
I’ve edited the post slightly for grammar and spelling, but here we go …back to July 2021.
I awakened very early in the morning to a surprise. I looked out the window to see the leaves had turned orange and red. It was a surprise for a couple of reasons. Firstly. Alberta leaves typically turn yellow; the reds and oranges of other areas don’t happen here. Secondly, it’s July, so it isn’t the time for the leaves to turn.
As I watched, the leaves returned to green. It was simply a momentary play of the sun rising through a cloud. The whole thing probably lasted no longer than a minute.
It did get me thinking about how quickly time seems to fly. Our oldest is 20, and our youngest turns 14 this month. My wife and I are coming up to our 25th wedding anniversary, and we’ve lived in this house for 13 years.
It feels hard to comprehend because it feels like only a few years since I graduated high school, a few less, and we were married, and the boys were born just a while ago. I know some people around me have gotten older, but it doesn’t seem I have (if I ignore the greying hair and expanded belt).
I remember hearing the slogan while growing up “Never trust anyone over thirty,” and now that’s me. I remember when the turn of the century seemed so far off that I would be in my forties, an age so old I couldn’t comprehend it, and now its history.
I meant to do many things, but suddenly it is years later, and they are still undone. I had great intentions of doing them tomorrow or, at least, SOON, but soon is already long past. The more time passes, the more awkward it seems to do now. I’m not talking about climbing mountains or making my first million.
I’m thinking of things like kind words left unsaid, old friends I haven’t told about Jesus and amends that should have been made.
Time just whizzed by, and suddenly both tomorrow and soon were ancient history.
King David understood how short our lives here really are.
My days are like an evening shadow;
I wither away like grass.
But you, O LORD, are enthroned forever;
you are remembered throughout all generations.
Psalm 102:11-12
Perhaps instead of chasing the things of this world, it might be time to pursue the things of God, the things of eternal importance.
Perhaps this would be an excellent time to make those calls and send those letters. Tell them how much they mean to you. Rebuild the bridges and make amends where possible. Extend forgiveness and grace; tell them about Jesus.
Until next time, may you be blessed with an eternal mindset.
Be Blessed
