Issue 1207 – Fused – July 29, 2023

The welder’s art has always fascinated me. Like some medieval alchemist, the welder applies heat and causes two pieces of metal to fuse together and become one.
It’s pretty different than the woodworker’s art. The carpenter applies glue and pressure, and the boards stick together but remain two boards attached together by glue. Still a convenient tool, but it lacks the mystique of welding.
Perhaps the heat and sparks make the welder’s skill seem so much more mysterious. Or maybe it’s the fact that you need to darken and protect your eyes with a shield to prevent damaging them.
I’ve tried welding a few times, and let’s leave it at the fact that I am less than skilled. I have difficulty seeing through the helmet, so I can’t see what I am trying to do. The friends attempting to teach me got frustrated quickly and finished the jobs themselves.
I read a blog somewhere recently which made the point that people often treat marriage as if the two parties were just joined by glue and could be separated relatively easily. In truth, though, when a couple is married, they become one flesh; they are fused together.
A marriage more closely represents a welder’s art than a carpenter’s skill.
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Matthew 19:5-6
Two becoming one flesh is an important concept that is repeated many times in the Bible.
In a marriage, there may be smoke, and at times sparks may fly, but the parties are indeed one flesh. God’s plan is for the two to be one. Marriage isn’t meant to be disposable.
Marriage, like holiness, is both done and in process. As sinners, we are forgiven our sins and covered with the righteousness of Christ until we get to glory, where sin will no longer be an issue. In the same way, when a couple is married, they are one flesh but have a journey together to learn to be one.
Marriage isn’t easy. The welder applies heat and pressure to get the metals to fuse into one. The struggles of two people being forged into one often cause stress and heat of a different sort.
If honest, any couple who has been married for a while will tell you it hasn’t all been the bed of roses and bliss that the romance novel makes it out to be. There are struggles along the way, but it is worth it.
If you are struggling in your marriage, seek help if you need it. If you are divorced, remember that God still loves you. If you are thinking of marriage, understand you are making a commitment for life.
It’s worth it all to be fused together into one, but it is seldom easy.
Praise God that He has given us marriage.
Be Blessed
