Issue 1233 – Sunset on the Fraser – August 28, 2023

Several times over the past few weeks, around 7 PM, Kathy and I have grabbed our decaf coffees and books and headed down to Matsqui Park. Once there, we pull the ever-present lawn chairs from the car’s trunk, set up along the river bank and enjoy some time along the Fraser River.
It isn’t exactly quiet time. The Mission Raceway across the river is sometimes active, and you can hear the cars. There is also the sound of passing traffic and trains, but it is still relatively peaceful.
It’s a popular park, and there are always plenty of picnickers and people fishing. Families enjoy a little bit of a beach when the tides allow.
It isn’t too difficult to ignore the ambient noise and enjoy the time sitting under the branches of a willow and savouring the moment.
Along the Fraser at Matsqui is an excellent spot for watching the sunset. The skies are different every evening, so the sunset varies as well. It’s pretty delightful to hear people walking up expressing joy at the beauty of the skies. Last night, I held onto a lady’s dog so she could take photos of the setting sun.
Whether they recognize the source or not, the sunset often causes people to just stop in awe.
Even the skies call us to praise the Lord.
Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion,
and to you shall vows be performed.
O you who hear prayer,
to you shall all flesh come.
When iniquities prevail against me,
you atone for our transgressions.
Blessed is the one you choose and bring near,
to dwell in your courts!
We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the holiness of your temple!
By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness,
O God of our salvation,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
and of the farthest seas;
the one who by his strength established the mountains,
being girded with might;
who stills the roaring of the seas,
the roaring of their waves,
the tumult of the peoples,
so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs.
You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy.
You visit the earth and water it;
you greatly enrich it;
the river of God is full of water;
you provide their grain,
for so you have prepared it.
You water its furrows abundantly,
settling its ridges,
softening it with showers,
and blessing its growth.
You crown the year with your bounty;
your wagon tracks overflow with abundance.
The pastures of the wilderness overflow,
the hills gird themselves with joy,
the meadows clothe themselves with flocks,
the valleys deck themselves with grain,
they shout and sing together for joy. Psalm 65
The sun’s rising and setting happen daily, and we can grow complacent about them. Yet, each time it happens, it is a testimony to the faithfulness of God and the wonder of His creation.
The next time you see the sun rising or setting, take some time to enjoy its beauty and marvel at God’s goodness.
Allow His creation to instill awe in you and praise His name.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
