Issue 1235 – RIP – august 30, 2023

I learned yesterday that a friend of mine, Gord Tyndle, had succumbed to the cancer plaguing him for some time and went home to glory a few days ago. Condolences and prayers to his loving wife, Roxanne and family.
RIP
Rest in Peace
Requiescat in Pace
Gord.
Gord and I worked together at the Royal Bank of Canada over 30 years ago. We were more workmates than close friends, but we did enjoy taking in the occasional Edmonton Trappers Baseball Game and other events. Our lives and careers moved in different connections, and we lost touch, reconnecting some years ago over Facebook. We kept pretty regular contact via social media from then on.
When we met, Gord was a Christian, and I was not. He was strong in his faith but never in my face about it. I liked Gord but thought he was a little weird with all that “Christian stuff.” He was an encourager then and remained so to the end, reaching out to many online and in person with prayer, Bible teaching and encouragement.
He is now rejoicing with the Lord He loves, and I have no doubt that when Jesus met him at the gates, Jesus said, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Gord was one of many people along the path to my coming to faith that played a role in my becoming a Christian. I know of many such people, and likely more that I have no idea about.
People often think coming to know Jesus is a sudden, spur-of-the-moment thing. It can certainly seem that way.
In reality, it is both a process and instantaneous. Our hearts are opened by the Spirit, and we give our lives to Christ. Yet, there can be many steps before that event can take place.
We are influenced by the Christians we meet. People are praying for us. The Holy Spirit is calling out. We may have to go through difficult times before we come to the end of ourselves and believe. Each of our journeys is unique.
I have always disliked the phrase “leading someone to Jesus.” I have been blessed to do that very thing, but that moment was simply part of a much larger process orchestrated by God Himself.
A soul being saved is a communal event; all glory goes to God, but He gives us the privilege of playing some small part.
At the well in Samaria, Jesus was speaking with his disciples.
Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” John 4:31-38
Every believer has a role in growing the kingdom. It might be preaching and teaching, prayer, or serving. It might be simply accepting someone where they are at.
Do not be discouraged. Keep on following the Lord and doing as He calls. When you get to glory, I think you will be amazed at what your role in the kingdom’s growth was.
Be blessed, my friends. Thank God for His mercy and all those he has put in your path to bring you to faith and strengthen you.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
Kevin
