Issue 1239 – Powder Blue – September 4, 2023

Recently, while out walking, I saw a pair of butterflies. There is nothing particularly unusual about that; I frequently see butterflies and moths (they are sometimes hard to tell apart at a distance.)
These two butterflies were tint, not much bigger than the end of my thumb. They seemed oblivious to the world around them as they flew around together.
They were a delightful shade of blue that I could call powder. The truth is I don’t really have a word for it. They were similar to the copper blue butterfly in this morning’s image but perhaps a bit bluer and softer in hue.
I was struck by the fact that butterflies, like flowers or fungi, seem to come in a seemingly endless number of sizes and colours. Butterflies are simply creatures in a way but intricate in design.
I pondered the artistry of a God who would invest the energy and time to make something as insignificant as a butterfly, so simple yet so complex and beautiful.
This is a God who creates billions of people but makes no two exactly the same. Even so-called “identical twins” will have some differences. God not only creates them, but he knows each in intimate detail. This is a God who loves everything He created.
That just staggers my imagination. I know it’s true; the Bible declares it, and the incarnation of Christ proves it. Still, it is hard to get my head around. How does something as insignificant as an individual human in the mass of humanity have such value to God?
The Psalmist wondered the same thing.
O Lord, what is man that you regard him, or the son of man that you think of him? Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow. Psalm 144:3-4
I am aware that we were created in God’s image, but it still flabbergasts me that the Lord knows and cares for us. I am grateful that He knows and loves each of us and that none is beyond His redemptive power.
Until next time, rejoice that God loves you.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
