Issue 1256 – Word of the Day – September 23, 2023

There is a daily posting on Facebook that I follow and quite enjoy. It is a word of the day post, where the speaker not only gives the word and defines it but uses it in a short tale. Don Huely has a great narrating voice and use it to full effect. A word of waning though, is sometimes he can stretch the boundaries of language a bit and some may find the odd post not to their taste.
Recently the word was snuggery. Don defines snuggery : Noun: A cozy or comfortable room, esp. one of small size, into which a person retires for seclusion or quiet…
My office is my snuggery. It’s where I do my writing and my drawing. Some of my best thinking is done in that little room. Much of my Bible reading and prayer is done there. It’s where I retreat first thing in the morning with my coffee.
The window area of my cozy nook is festooned with plants. Kathy teasingly calls it my jungle. I’d have more plants but the light is limited. Amongst the plants that grace my little den is a coffee plant. I thought was an apt addition, since I love to drink coffee there.
The deep green foliage is attractive and accents the other plants. I doubt that it will ever grow coffee cherries. Those red drupes (stone fruit) will contain two seeds, which are roasted and ground to make coffee.
I doubt Jesus ever drank coffee, it wasn’t widely known until many centuries after his death and resurrection. Still, I have no doubt that there was a quiet place that He would go to think and pray.
More than likely it was somewhere outdoors as the houses of the time were small and functional. I don’t anyone think that anyone other than the ultra-rich had rooms in their houses that could be snuggeries.
But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray. Luke 5:16
In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. Luke 6:12
We all need to have that quiet spot. It might be a designated room like my office, a quiet spot in the garden, a favourite chair in the living room or for a busy parent, five precious minutes alone in the washroom.
That time away from the pressures of the day and the fires of the momentarily urgent is important.
For some people their time is first thing in the morning and for others it is late at night. Still others might only find it in small stolen moments.
Whenever you are able, take that time to think of God and His blessings and mercy. As Paul writes to the church in Phillip
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
May your snuggery be a place for you to be refreshed by the Lord.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
Kevin
