Issue 1279 Filtered Light – October 23, 2023

Misty mountain sunrise along the river. The sunlight is filtered by the mist around the trees
Misty morning sunrise

I found today’s image buried in my photo file. It looks familiar, but I don’t know where or when it was taken. I’m unsure if it’s one I took; it may be one that Kathy took or a reader submitted. If it is yours, let me know, and I can give proper credit.

I was struck by how the morning(?) mist filters the sunlight. The sun is visible but not clear. It is quite a beautiful scene. This is the sort of place I could just sit and contemplate the marvels of nature and the wonder of God.

In so many ways, this image typifies our faith walk. We know that God is there. The evidence is all around us and is undeniable to anyone who takes the time to seek Him. Yet, we cannot see Him fully. He is, to some degree, shielded from our eyes.

In part, that is because our sinful nature cannot look upon the fullness of the living God. Even though we have been justified (our sin debt paid) and are being sanctified (set apart, made holy), we have not yet been glorified (wholly made over into the state of being all God has created to be (purified from our sin and removed from the potential to sin).

Yet, what we can see and comprehend is greater than anything the world offers. If we stop and watch, we can see miracles unfold around us. From the mundane birth of a child (only mundane in that it happens daily all over the world. No parent would consider the birth of their child to be mundane) to miraculous provision and healings that cannot be explained, God is not still.

We cannot write such things off as coincidence. They happen too frequently to be merely random events. They can’t be chance because chance is only a measure of probability; it has no causal power.

Even when we get to glory, I cannot imagine that we will see and understand God fully. The finite creature will never fully comprehend the infinite creator.

Still, we will see Him as clearly as our limited minds and senses will be able to comprehend. We will bask in the presence of His perfect life.

Our perspective on all things will be changed as we will be redeemed from the penalty of our sin, removed from the presence of sin and relieved of the ability to sin.

We will see one another in our perfected forms, free of sin-filled judgment and freed to love unconditionally. The mist will be cleared, and we can appreciate things fully.

No more ugly differences because of skin colour, culture or gender. No more divisions over non-essential practices and doctrines. No more petty personality conflicts stemming from wounds (real or imagined). All such things will have been delegated to the category of forgiven and forgotten.

The church will be revealed to be the beautiful bride of Christ. She will be pure and spotless and ready for her perfect husband.

Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” Revelation 19:6-9

Let us rejoice and be glad, for the mist will lift, and we shall be present at the marriage feast.

Hallelu Yah / Praise God

Kevin
