Issue 1285 – Whiskey Jack – October 30, 2023

One of my favourite birds is the Canada Gray Jay ((Perisoreus canadensis), also known as the camp robber, the grey jay or the whiskey jack.
The name Whiskey Jack (not to be confused with Jack Whiskey – a common name for a brand of drinking alcohol) draws its name from Wisakedjak, a character in much North American First Nations storytelling and mythology.
Wisakedjak is generally portrayed as being responsible for a great flood which destroyed the world. In other stories, he is also one of the beings who created the current world, either on his own or with magic given to him by the Creator for that specific purpose.
One of the things I find fascinating about the biblical narrative of the great deluge in Noah’s time is that it finds a counterpart in most religions and mythic sagas worldwide. Tribes and nations around the globe speak of a time when the gods were angry, and the world was flooded, with only a few survivors on a boat.
That consistency doesn’t prove the biblical account of Noah and the flood, but it does suggest a worldwide flood calamity at some point in the past. There are too many points of consistency across the stories to discount them.
There is scientific evidence of a worldwide flood. Some of it is controversial, and some compelling. You can research that on your own and make your own decisions. Once again, that doesn’t prove the bible true; it just adds weight to the concept of a past global flood.
Like all of Scripture, we must evaluate the text and evidence to come up with our own conclusions and respond accordingly. We can make reasoned conclusions and respond in faith or reject the Scripture.
Our faith isn’t a blind leap into darkness, although it is possible to do that and land on the truth of Christ. I cannot convince someone else of the veracity of the claims of Scripture or Jesus; that is the Holy Spirit’s job.
I will say that if the flood story is true (and I believe it to be so), we ought to heed what it tells us.
God has judged mankind in the past, and He promises a coming judgment.
This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 2 Peter 3:1-7
If you have accepted Christ, those words should cause no fear. Instead, they should compel you to warn others about the coming wrath and the promises of Jesus.
If you are not a believer, those same words ought to cause a chill. The Word is true despite what scoffers say, and only Christ can bring you safely through. I urge you to investigate the claims of Jesus for yourself and get right with Him today.
Hold fast to the hope and promise of Christ.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
Kevin
