Issue 1315 – Christmas Lights – December 7, 2023

The street we live on is getting pretty well decorated for Christmas. It’s a mix of festive inflatables and various degrees of Christmas lights.
Some folks started decorating right after Remembrance Day, while others began December 1. Some folks won’t decorate, while others leave their lights up all year and just turn them on come December.
Since we share a home with one of our sons and his family, the outdoor decorating task falls to them. They start early and like lots of lights. I don’t miss doing the job but still enjoy the finished product.
For many years, Kathy and I put up the lights, which always seemed tangled. No matter how hard we worked to put them away correctly or what gadget we used to keep them safe, they seemed to tie themselves in notes.
Unravelling them was about as easy as trying to unwrap a spring ball of garter snakes. If you have never seen one, garter snakes often spend the wintered wrapped together in underground dens in balls of hundreds or even thousands. It is almost impossible to tell where one snake ends and another begins.

Our lives can sometimes get as tangled as a string of lights or a ball of snakes. Sometimes, life comes at us so fast that we find ourselves tangled and immobilized because we are overwhelmed.
Maybe we have been caught in a lie, or some other sin and the web gets into an ever-increasing mess as we try to extricate ourselves. Perhaps, for some reason, we have been avoiding a person or situation and find ourselves face-to-face and trying to unravel the mess.
Experiencing an accident, illness or loss of a job can lead to a tangled web of financial issues. Who, if anyone, gets paid? How do we survive until the situation is resolved?
A relationship breaking down, the death of a loved one and more can drive us to that place of powerlessness and entangled in a flood of emotions.
The possible scenarios where we might find ourselves tied up in knots are seemingly limitless.
Where can we go to get things sorted out?
It is the Lord who can carry us and sort out the mess.
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. Psalm 121
There is no mess so tangled that the Lord cannot unravel it. There is no problem too big for Him to tackle. Not every problem will be solved overnight, or quite the way we hope, but God is perfect, merciful and just, so we can trust His remedy.
Whatever you face today, take it to Him.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
