Issue 1317 – Jesus is Lord – December 9, 2023

Kathy and I have been continuing in our daily advent reading. The reading comes from two sources. We have a set of Christmas ornaments, one for each day of Advent, and each contains a Scripture reference. Those references take us through the highs and lows of Scripture, beginning In Genesis and leading to the Incarnation.
The second is reading through the Gospel of Luke. Luke has 24 chapters, perfect for an overview of the life and ministry of Jesus, reading one chapter a day. Yesterday was Luke 8, a long chapter, but it tells a lot about the power of Jesus.
He is sovereign over nature.
One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. Luke 8:22-24
He defeats the demonic.
When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” Luke 8:27-28
Jesus heals disease.
And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling and falling before him and declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him and how she had been immediately healed. Luke 8:4
The Christ can raise the dead.
And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. Luke 8:53-55
Jesus is Lord. He is Lord over the spiritual realms, the natural world, and anything to do with humanity. He is even sovereign over death.
At Christmas, we can get fixated on the sentimental side of the narrative. The story of God being born in a manger to a working-class family is powerful. The angels rejoiced, and the shepherds praised. It is great stuff, worthy of our attention, all the more so because it is true.
Still, we need to remember who it was that came and why. That Christ-child grew up to be Jesus, and He came to redeem hopeless and lost people.
Praise his name.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
