Issue 1341 – Bugling – January 11, 2024

In the heart of the dense woods, miles away from town, we found ourselves surrounded by nature’s symphony. The bugle of the bull elk reverberated against the towering mountains, creating a mesmerizing harmony of bugles slightly out of sync.
An elk’s bugle is both beautiful and disturbing. It defies description but leaves an indelible mark once heard. Some liken it to something from a horror movie, a stark contrast to the moose’s grunt or the wolf’s howl. It’s a diverse pitch whistle akin to a demented bugler.
Similarly, the shofar, the traditional ram’s horn trumpet of the Middle East, carries distinct sounds. Tekiah, a long, straight blast. Shevarim, three medium, wailing sounds. Teruah, nine quick blasts in succession.
Each sound holds profound symbolism for many in the Jewish faith. Tekiah crowns God as king of all people. Shevarim echoes the sobbing heart of the Jewish people as they await the Messiah. Teruah acts as a warning, an alarm urging us to reconcile with God.
In the military, trumpets, bugles, and similar instruments were once used to communicate amidst the chaos of battle, unsettling the enemy. Biblical stories echo this, from Joshua’s trumpets at Jericho to Gideon’s surprising victory with the silver trumpet and shofar.
If anyone has ever watched a movie with the U.S. Cavalry in it, you would have heard the cry of the bugler calling out taps, retreat and charge or any other calls. The military used trumpets and bugles for centuries to communicate across the noise of battle and unnerve their enemies.
Joshua and his army marched around the walls of Jericho, playing some form of trumpet (shofar?). Gideon and his small army stampeded their enemies by sneaking up and blowing trumpets at night: the silver trumpet and the shofar figure prominently in numerous places in the Word.
God introduced His presence to Israel with a trumpet blast.
“On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.” Exodus 19:16-19
He will announce His return with a similar call.
“For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17
